Applications are now open for the second round of funding by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Energy for America Program. Rural small businesses in Tennessee may apply for loans and grants to support their renewable energy and energy efficiency projects.

Energy efficiency and renewable energy projects helps farmers, ranchers and rural small businesses save money. The Rural Energy for America Program wants to invest in these programs because, as USDA Rural Development State Director Bobby Goode explained it, “It also provides jobs, creates economic opportunity, and leads to a more secure energy future.”

Small businesses may apply for grants through the program. USDA will set aside 20 percent of the total program funds for grants of up to $20,000. In addition to energy audit and renewable energy development assistance grants, small businesses may also be eligible to receive renewable energy system and energy efficiency guaranteed loans and grants.

Deadline to apply

Eligible businesses have until October 31, 2016, to apply for renewable energy system and energy efficiency grants of $20,000 or less. The deadline to apply for renewable energy system and energy efficiency grants greater than $20,000 and combination grants and guaranteed loans are due by March 31, 2017.
