Ashton Kutcher -- Actor, Hottie, and Angel Investor
From “That ‘70s Show” to major technology investor
Kutcher's investing in Skype was one of his first moves into the tech space. Not a bad move, considering that Microsoft bought Skype two years later for over $8 billion, and Kutcher tripled his investment. Aside from the money, however, Kutcher likes technology and looks for promising start-ups, targeting consumer-focused businesses. But they need to have something special, as he explains, “I look for companies that solve problems in intelligent and friction-free ways and break boundaries.”
Airbnb, for example, the website that allows users to offer their homes or their sofas as an alternative to hotels, certainly fit the bill. Other boundary-breaking companies he chose to invest in include music app Shazam, transportation phenomenon Uber, and the relationship app Couple. By now, Kutcher is well known in Silicon Valley as a savvy investor.
Not just another pretty face
Kutcher co-founded his venture capital firm, A-Grade Investments, in 2010, which is reportedly valued at over $100 million. In 2015, he and his partner, Guy Oseary, started their own investment fund called Sound Ventures. The bottom line is that Kutcher knows what he's doing and showing no signs of slowing down. Good news for technology startups and for Kutcher who has once again proven that he is not just another pretty face.
