Toyota International Teacher Program Sends Teachers Overseas For Professional Development

Each year since 1998, Toyota has sent teachers to places such as Japan, Costa Rica, the Galapagos Islands, and South Africa to help the enrich their teaching experience. The program is open to all U.S. secondary school teachers.

Teachers must be full-time classroom teachers or teacher-librarians in a secondary school in the U.S. teaching grades 7-12. They must have at least three years of teaching experience before applying. Eligible teachers in all disciplines may apply. The program sends selected teachers to international countries for two weeks in order to learn more about global and environmental education and share this information with their classes and communities.

The program is extremely competitive. Candidates are chosen by a panel of teachers and administrators based on their professionalism, and their expressed goals for how they plan to share their experience with others in the classroom and in the community. Teachers can be those who teach foreign languages, social studies, mathematics, science, music, English and vocational education. A knowledge of environmental science is not required in order to apply.

The program is sponsored by Toyota Motor Sales USA, Inc., whose philanthropic support includes programs supporting education, the environment, and safety. The company has donated more than $500 million to worthwhile initiatives since 1991.
